Greetings all,

I'm in the process of gathering the necessary parts for a refresh of my new (to me) motor. I've read the "ramblings" article and have a good idea of how to attack the motor.

I have run into one stumbling block - the throttle return spring is broken on the carb (I'm hoping that the last guy did not over rev the motor). When I went to the parts diagrams on the web I could not find a '65 parts diagram - the oldest I could find was a '68 6hp..

So, two questions: 1) Does anyone know of where to find a parts diagram for a '65 and 2) Does anyone know if part number 0312853 (throttle return spring for a '68 6hp motor) is the correct part for my '65?

Just thought of another question. Do folks replace the water pump and thermostat on a regular basis on these motors?

Thanks to all for all your support.

I have the exact same motor.

Unfortunately I do not have the parts manual either or I'd help you out (nobody has one online for this particular motor that I have found)... do you have an Evinrude dealer near you? They should be able to help you.

Most folks replace the impeller inside the water pump each year or so, the water pump itself will last a LONG TIME. (Depending on the environment you operate your motor in.)

The thermostat is like the thermostat in your car.... when it breaks replace it. (They are not real expensive either, you can test in a pot of hot water to see if it opens like it is supposed to.)

You should also read the "Top secret files" here, lots of good info.

Thanks for the info Cap'n Chaos. I've also found a really poor copy of a parts manual, don't remember were though - I'd be glad to send you a copy - all I need is an email address. They show the part number as 302996. I'll check around locally for a dealer.

I have two follow-up questions: 1) What water pump impeller do you use... I understand that the original is NLA (maybe I'm wrong) and the new ones are a bit smaller - a part number would be great! 2) Folks are often mentioning "Top secret files" - I've not been able to find them on the site - would you mind providing a link?

Thanks,

The water pump impeller is still available, at least my local Evinrude dealer had one on the shelf. I'm sorry, I do not have a part number for it at the moment... maybe tommorow I can look in the shed for an old receipt.

The "top secret file" is posted at the top of the Johnson/Evinrude repair forum... a "sticky", hopefully the link below will get you there.

You can look on Ebay for manuals / parts lists... they do show up from time to time, that's where I found my original service manual for $20.
