Engine Not running...... Key in ON position...... Shift switch in whatever mode (reverse/forward) you're testing...... Volt black lead connected to powerhead ground, Red lead connected to whichever shift wire knife connector you're testing..........
Assuming the battery is perfect and fully charged.
With the shift wire knife connectors still connected BUT with the insulating 2boot slid back, the mode you're testing should read a full 12 volts. Anything less indicates a faulty shift switch or faulty wiring.
Now, with the knife connectors disconected, and using a Ohm Meter. Same meter lead connections as above, the ohm reading of each shift coil should be 8 ohms. If using an ammeter (some people do), the reading should be between 1.5 to 1.9 amps.
