1965 9.5 evinrude water impeller

Any one know how to get to the water impeller in a 1965 9.5 evinrude 9522 C E05030. I tried pulling the 6 bolts out that hold the lower unit on but the shift linkage is holding it i can see the water impeller housing and see the shift linkage i also see the part that connects the linkage together but the lower unit will not drop far enough to get to the bolt to take it off if their is where it disconnects from like some other small outboards.

Try shifting into forward or reverse when you have the lower unit loose. That will drop the shift rod connection just far enough to remove the bottom screw. Don't worry if you drop the screw, it won't go very far and you can get it after the lower unit comes out.
