Okay so I got this motor from my uncle. This is my first boat ever and am super pumped. I have some mechanic skills mostly from working on my car doing transmission swaps, shocks & springs, etc. The motor has est. less then 100 hours on it. He has had it since 1998 and ran it a couple times, 4-5 times, a summer in freshwater only, engine never seen saltwater to our knowledge.
In '98 he had the carb rebuilt by a Evinrude dealer. I don't think he did much other maintenance on it but it always ran good for him. I got it from him 2 years ago. When I took it out with him in 2004, the high end of the carb seemed to need adjusting, but other then that it wasn't too bad....although couldn't plane out with a 14' MFG and 3 adults.
Then it sat for 2 years with nothing done to it (long story but mostly licesne and registration related). Last weekend I finally got all that taken care of. I started it up with the muffs on and here are the issues as I see them. I would like to know where to start to get this great motor back to its peak potential:
- engine started right up with the choke out, but wouldn't stay running with choke in (still using 2 year old gas).
- when running with choke out it was "sputtering" alot. like it was starved for air or the carb is gummed?
- the throttle won't go past the "start" position, which looks to be about 1/2 way through the throttle range
- water from the engine in the driveway had significant oil in it (might just be a 2 stroke thing....not much experience with 2 stroke engines)
- when done, the engine leaked oil for about 3 weeks...slowly. When running it was leaking more consistantly. Also the oil was almost a thick milky gray color coming from the lower unit.
- seems to be some oil leaking from the gasket between the lower unit and the 5" extension that came with this model (33553)
- peeing seemed decent strength (but I don't have much of a reference point)
- electric choke doesn't work, had to manually do it.
I was going to start with something small like replacing the water impeller to get more familiar with the engine, but I don't know where to start. Should I just take it to a dealer and have them do an overhaul?
Any advice is much appreciated.
