I am not mechanically inclined but I want to learn. I have a 1965 evinrude 40hps outboard and I can't find the right fuel pump or the fuel pump kit.

I bought a boat that this motor is on in the beginning of spring and the guy told me that the motor needed new points. I put the new points on and a new kill switch & starting solenoid and It fired right up on the first turn but now 3 months later after getting the floor in I go to start it and it won't start. My dad shot some starting fluid in the carb and it would turn over but die instantly.

I take off the fuel pump and it's just bolted to the motor. Theres no moving parts on it or in it so how does it pump the fuel to the carb?

The other question I have is the fuel goes to the carb and then to the diaphragm? Which goes to the magento? I really would like if someone could explain to me how this all works together.

I'm getting the manual Friday because I need to get some parts but I want to make sure I get the right stuff that could be causing the probelm. I figured I would rebuild the carb and rebuild the fuel pump or buy a new if I can find the right one.

Any help would be great. Thanks

Read the faq files at least. (link in my signature).

Way too many questions to tackle here.

Sounds like clogged carbs.
Order carb kits, use your model number to double check yr of motor.
Order drain seals for gear box, change the oil, do a complete maintenence.
