I have a '65 Angler 5 hp I just bought. Not sure how long it has been since it's seen the water. When I bought it the guy hooked up the gas and it started on the second pull in a trash can. I bought a new gas tank (3 gal) and hose, mixed it about 50:1 (with 91 octane), primed and choked it and it started on the second pull, ran for about 4 seconds and would not start again. Should i change the plugs? Clean the carb? Is 91 octane OK? I'm not real familiar with outboards so any advice would help...thanks.

Hi Isykes,
I would start with a carb cleaning. A new waterpump impeller is probably in order as well. If the plugs are obviously burnt up or fouled, then change them. Otherwise a cleaning and gapping at .030" should be sufficient. Plugs should be Champion J4C or J6C - I use them interchangeably. The J6Cs tend to do better if you spend most of your time at idle for trolling, etc.
87 octane is fine - no need for the expensive stuff. 50:1 is recommended by the factory, but I would go a little richer as that motor has a couple of bronze babbit bearings at the center and bottom mains on the crank. 40:1 should give you enough insurance on that one.
- Scott

thanks alot Scot for the superfast reply, I really appreciate it. now, any specific do's or dont's when cleaning the carb or changing the impeller? Should I have this done or can I do it. I'm fairly mechanically inclined but, like I said, pretty new to the outboard scene also. Thanks again.

The basic stuff you're looking to do would probably be covered in a library type broad-spectrum manual. Evinrude/Johnson used that style waterpump on many models for many years, and the carb is essentially the same as many others. A model specific manual is always best, but the general one would probably do the job in your case.

Both jobs are fairly simple, but there are a few little hiccups that can occur if you're not following manual, .ie how to set the float level in the carb, or being sure to replace the o-ring at the top of the driveshaft prior to reassembly. I'm pretty sure that unit has the spring-loaded bottom main carbon seal that sits at the top of the driveshaft, so noting the order in which it comes apart would be a good idea.

- Scott
