Ok, i need to see why my prop is not spinning in neutral, however i don't know how to get the lower end off. So I have the plate that looks like a boot taken off the back, under the engine(the plate w/the exhaust hole in it), I have the next 8 bolts under that removed, (which is like a sleeve), and then i have the last row under that removed......How in the heck does the foot come off????? I noticed a diamond shaped plate on the left side of the engine, i removed it, then removed the next plate, and saw 2 bolts(as if it were the gear rod).....is it those 2 bolts that will let the lower end drop off??????? I've been out here working now for like 3 hours, so any help would be GREATLY appreciated........

Settle down Chris. More thinking and less doing.

What model engine are you working on?
What makes you think the prop should turn in Neutral?
Why are you working on the engine without a Manual? Pros don't do that.

The engine is a 1965 Evinrude 60h.p., I meant to say that the prop won't spin in neutral or in gear, however someone suddested that the prop is not engaged until in gear. Either way, i just got the engine running and she is purring like a walrus, i just need it to go into gear, and i need to know how to take off the lower end to make sure it is not seized up on me.

you finaly found the shift rod, loosen the bottom screw, and if you have all the bolts out from the underside. the unit should droput, may be one hidden under the trim tab.

this is a 58 35 hp but same principle. remove the bolts at the top of the picture, there were 6 on this motor.

Is there a phillips head screw in the lower unit gearcase, on one side below the "bullet"? If there is a hole there and no phillips head screw, you found the trouble. The screw is a pivot pin for the shifting mechanism inside. A similar one is shown in the red gearcase posted above by tashasdaddy.

All the bolts facing up need to be removed. You found the shift linkage plate. As stated, remove the lower screw to disconnect the shift linkage.

F R is right, if that phillips head on the side of the gearcase has been tampered with, that is your shifting trouble. That screw holds the shift fork in place. Sometimes you can re-stick if you're real lucky. Otherwise, the lower unit has to come apart.
