i have an 18 hp 1965 fd-19...i have no spark on one cyl (tested with a spark tester) going to test the coils tomorrow, but i don't know what resistance level im checking for. i just put all new points and condensers in because the motor ran fine and coils looked newer, but the points needed replacing. i don't have a service manual for this outboard yet, so any help is appreciated. they were sierra points and condensors and the gap is correct, so i don't think they are the issue, but i won't know until i pull the flywheel tomorrow.

also, motor has not been pumping water well...i pulled the thermo on it tonight and its pretty well shot, but should this motor pump water out the exhaust even when the thermo is closed? it most definitely does not. impeller and plate are new as of last year, and i can feel a good amount of resistance from the impeller when i try to spin the driveshaft by hand. is it possible that somehow i have the impeller plate on wrong? or is something more likely blocking the passage. the water tube did seat correctly when i put the lower unit back on and i've taken it off several more times just to make sure...is there something i can do to check for blockage with the thermo out???

thanks all! looking to get this motor running well again before duck season rolls around

There are two water flow paths through that powerhead. One flow path is open all the time, regardless of thermostat position. The other flow path is controlled by the 'stat. So....water flows through the always-open path all the time, and is discharged out the exhaust relief any time it is running. Actually, it in nearly impossible to tell if the thermostat is open or not by looking at the discharge water. Not a biggie deal, do you keep track of the 'stat position in your car?

Now, if it only flows when the 'stat is open, the normally always-open path is plugged up somewhere. That usually happens in the area of the cylinder head gasket. There is a small passage that it flows through in that area. Salt water often is the culprit, if it has been run in salt. Pull the head off for a looksee. You will need a new gasket to put it back on. Available here at iboats.

no salt water...this motor has spent its whole life in iowa. i was thinking that it probably should be pumping all the time. is there a clever way to push water through (i dont' have running water at the shop) to see if its making it through? i suppose i can bring it home to hook it up to the hose. if not, i think the local omc dealer had head gaskets in stock for this girl the last time i was there. they were fairly cheap too. i almost wouldn't mind popping the head just to make sure it was alright, but im not going to unless i have to.
