hey everyone...
i'm somewhat new to outboards and recently did a good part out of a 2000 merc 25 that i bought for 100 bucks! i used some of the money to invest in some outboards. i located a fd-19 18 hp johnson and a 1962 qd-23 10 hp johnson for a grand total of $350. i'm in the process of resealing the lower unit on the 18 (oil was milky in the lower unit) and when i was disassembling it i did't ever notice an impeller pin in the driveshaft. would a local dealer be able to replace it or is it a standard size pin that could be found at a hardware store?

also...now that i have these 2 beauties, which service manuals would be the best to get? i would love to get one thats downloadable or online. my brain just works better that way and i have a laptop that is pretty much dedicated only to the garage so it would be perfect. its a lot harder to lose than a book.

i will say these motors run great. put them in the tank and they both fired right up. to the 10 to the lake and it actually planed my 1967 aluminum monark 16' with just me in it.

Any Johnnyrude dealer should have the drive pin. Personally, I prefer a paper copy of the manual. The ones I have are used in the garage and are full of dirt and greasy fingerprints. I wouldn't want all that on my laptop keyboard.

HI alt. Couple of great motors you got there. I used to have a QD-22 and now have an FD-20C, both awesome. I was able to get a copy of a complete service manual for all 1.5-40 hp Johnsons of this vintage from one of those sneaky torrent websites. I'm not saying you should do that, but they are out there. I would not use a Clymer or Seloc brand manual as many people here in the forums have not had the best of luck using them. However, you may be able to get by without one by using the links below. They may not all be for your specific models, but the principals are the same. You can get virtually any part you may need for basic tune ups, etc...right here at iboats. It shouldn't cost more than $100 a piece to get them both purring like kittens. Give 'em a read. You may find that you don't need the manual after all. Holler if have questions or get stuck. Keep us posted. We love pics ;)

thanks for the links...believe it or not, i have actually read through all of those. i got the lower unit back together today and sealed up...i want to take it out on thursday to tweak the carbs. both of them idle well...however i question to spark plug gap on the 10 hp...one site i found says it should be .20, but another says .30...anyone confirm what it should be?

yup. Points at .020" and spark plugs at .030" is what you want. they're usually good out of the box, but you can check them again to be sure. Champion J4C or J6C are the best to get as these old motors were designed around champion plugs.

well i tried to go out for a ride tonight...major failure. apparently i didn't have the linkage seated right on the 18 horse. it would shift into reverse in the neutral position and neutral in the forward position. i think i fixed it tonight...

after the 18 horse was pretty much dead on the water at that point, i threw the 10 horse on and started it right up. then again after a minute it started running on one cylinder...i thought the million year old plugs were the problem, but i was wrong. i pulled the flywheel when i got home to find this...

coils have about 100 cracks in them...so to the parts store i go tomorrow. luckily napa has them in stock...hopefully my return trip to the lake tomorrow will be a little more successful!

sounds like you've found you're problem. not to worry, the new coils are much, much more reliable than the old ones and should last for many, many years. I would recommend getting some new 7mm, copper core spark plug wires while you're at it. you'll be amazed at the difference they make. NAPA usually sells it for about $3 a foot. You'll need a couple of 90 degree crimp on, or twist on, boots too. if you don't get new wires you should trim off about 1/2" of the old wires to get a nice fresh connection. be sure you twist the s'plug wires on to the coil posts as well. this link may help.

so when reassembling the 18hp, the prop nut cracked. it looked pretty old, but are there any other replacement options? the ones online were almost $30? any chance you can replace it with a slotted nut and a rubber or plastic bushing. i remember my dad did that on an old evinrude once....or is there a cheaper one than the factory replacement? i couldn't find one

the part number is now omc 0390716...the actual part number is 305469. the only one i can find is $27 plus shipping and handling! I was wondering if there is a way to use a slotted nut and a nylon spacer? i think i can get grade 8 slotted nuts at the auto parts store, i would only have to find the spacer after that. i just think that nearly $40 after shipping is a bit nuts for a piece of plastic. i tried finding a sierra part number for it, but it doesn't exist...at least not from what i could see
