All the old Mercs are easy to work on, might require some special tools ( like ring clamps ), biggest problem ( work-vice ) are their age ... stuck bolts, corrosion ++

As for parts ... some parts are NLA ( No Longer Available ) from Mercury, but it's still lots of parts available ( bearings, rings, gaskets, seals ++ ) .
One big advantage with Mercury are their main design idea.... just add a cylinder or two to make a bigger engine, meaning some parts from a 20 hp can be used in a 20, 25, 30, 50, 55, 75hp engine ( quick example.. #7A1 = connecting rod used in the Mark 20 > 75hp engine.. )

Bigger part can be harder to find, but not impossible ( complete lower units, blocks, crankshafts, cowling ), talking second hand parts :)

If you know what you're looking for you can find lots of NOS ( New Old Stock ) parts on eBay from time to time ...

As for info and fellow Mercaholics :D....you will find lots of them here...

i'm not a mechanic but looking a these old mercs for a while now you can see they were well made . many of them have corroded original wires and they loose their spark, bad power packs, coils, stators ,etc. the parts are on ebay, oldmercs.com or here on Iboats. if the compression is there find the spark and you got a real good motor. stick around here with these guys and you will learn alot
