1965 Ski Twin 33 water intake screen

Hi, I just got this motor and I'm going through it to put on my boat. I see from the parts manual that there is a water intake screen located down by the prop. The plug looks permanent, is there a way to service this screen, or is it designed to "self clean"?

Drill out the plug.----Remove screen.------Tap for a pipe plug.----Install new / repaired screen.-----Install plug.

I have never seen the need to remove one for cleaning.
