Ok I have a 1966 6hp Fisherman(6602 E/ E08208) that I purchased this summer. Upon purchase/inspection i noticed gear oil leaking under the gasket of the water pump plate. So i went to the local boat repair shop, and ordered every seal and gasket known to man on the lower unit thinking might as well do it now that i have it apart, plus it was going to need it sooner or later. So did that, and all went well. But when i put ton the gasket (under the water pump plate) i used 3M gasket adhesive hoping to aid in the leaking problem. Put back together and guess what..leaking in the same spot, and on the bottom of the lower unit (where it seperates for the gears) and i replaced the seal to the shaft and the spaghetti seal that is supposed to seal the two halves together. Went back and ordered the same gasket and spaghetti seal. This time i REALLY cleaned the area (scoring pad etc.) and this time did not use 3M thinking it might have been a bad move, put all back together, tripple checked everything and filled her up with lower unit lube and STILL leaking in both places. The area's are not bent or warped, done this many times before on my larger outboards with no problems...uuurgggg. It really leaks from the water pump when i lay the engine horizontal on the ground. I went to Autozone and bought some non-hardening gasket sealant (2B) and thinking cleaning the gasket /seal good again a trying the 2B on top of that? Running out of options here....

Thanks guy's

when it was apart did you check to see if the water pump housing was cracked? Buddy of mine once over tightened the housing bolts and cracked it without knowing it. don't know if that's the cause but it's just an idea

No cracks that I can see. The lower unit/parts seem to all be in good condition. Just leaking at the seal/gasket.

Thanks again

I have to tell you that that is extremely unusual. In fact in all my 24 years of full time outboard service I don't remember ever seeing that gasket leak--at least not if it was new and installed correctly. Are you certain that is where the leak is? Something must be bent or distorted in some way.

As for the spagetti seal, it should be cut so it lays along the outer edge of the groove. The ends must be cut square and just a hair long so they push back when the skeg is installed. Use sealer, especially at the ends. Shouldn't leak.
