I have the above mention outboard that I already have invested quite a bit of time into with new carb kit and ignition components. The motor starts and runs and speed well but refuses to idle smooth regardless of slow speed idle adjustment. While trying to diagnose the problem on the lake I noticed the motor would idle quite a bit better with the motor cover off. I did some checking here and quickly found that I likely have an exhaust leak somewhere causing exhaust fumes to be drawn into the carb and cause the rough idle. FR had a post describing the likely exhaust leaks and the first places I checked were the easiest, namely the exhaust boot at the rear of the motor (I removed and inspected and all is well) the second being the exhaust cover and gaskets on the side of the engine (soapy water again no apparent leaks). From what I have found here is that it seems likely that I will need to remove the lower unit and look at the shift rod boot and check for leaks. My question is that since the boot(0309631) appears to be NLA what are my options if I do indeed find the assumed leak? Can this boot be repaired? Options that come to mind are silicon or maybe spray foam insulation. Anyone here tried this or something similar and what was your outcome? Also are there other possible sources for an exhaust leak that I should be aware of? It appears that I can diagnos the shift rod boot by removing the lower unit (which I already had off to replace impeller) and remove the three screws that hold the plate on up inside the lower unit housing. Is this correct? Thanks to anyone that can offer advise.
