I just bought a used (beaten) 1966 Johnson 20hp FDL-20C.
It needs lower unit work & when I disassembled my gear housing & removed the gears from my prop shaft, I didn't pay attention to my clutch dog...
Now, I see there is a set of double grooves on one face of the part.
Is this from wear, or does it need to be assembled with that face paired to one of the gears?

Thanks, in advance!

If I remember the last one I did, the grooves faced the reverse gear. I'm sure others will chime in.

As assembled at the factory, and "supposedly" in the field, the grooves face the forward gear. But it really doesn't matter. They are more or less so you can put it back the same way. After all these years, it may have been swapped around half a dozen times.

So for that matter, best side forward gear :D, I swear the one I pulled was facing reverse.

Thanks, guys.
That's what I thought, but figured I better check...Just in case there was something goofy going on with my particular clutch dog.
