Hi all:

I pulled my 66 Merc 110 outboard for the first time this year. Put new lower unit oil in. Checked spark plugs. Gap 0.030. Took a few pulls (running for a few seconds each time), but it eventually started up and stayed running. I ran it three times with the muffs on, about 10-12 seconds each time. Somebody please refresh my memory: where is the tattle-tale (pee-stream) on this motor? There is a plug further up on the motor (just under the back bottom cowl) that is labeled "flush". I assume this is for cooling while running out of water (instead of using the muffs). Is this correct? And what type of hose or attachment is used to flush? (Connection is too small for a garden hose).

Also, after I ran it the third time I noticed a small amount of smoke coming up from the powerhead (I had the top cowl off to expose the powerhead) while idling, and I shut the motor off IMMEDIATELY. I then noticed a little bit of smoke emitting off of the outside top of the driveshaft column (near the base of the bottom cowl). All told, the outboard idled three times, about 10 to 12 seconds each time, and I saw smoke. Could there be any damage to the powerhead (cylinders, pistons), or could I have burned up my water pump?

First post all year. Hope its not too far out of protocol for the forum. Happy boating (fishing) to y'all and thanks in advance for any replies.
