I have gear lube leaking out of sterndrive. How big of a job is it to remove, reseal, and reinstall said sterndrive. What should I expect to pay if I can't do it myself? Thanks

Thanks for the input. Parts are available and shared by the other pre alphas and early alphas. What does a upper and lower reseal take on say an early alpha 1 take? Is it a tricky 8 hour job or more? or something that can be done in an afternoon? Thanks again.

It's not a difficult job if it's only a reseal. If you have to set up shimming, then it will take longer. The only possible problems you'll encounter are the need for a few special tools, and any heavily corroded parts that may break as you attempt to dis-assemble them....

Removing the drive takes about 6 minutes. You then need to pressure test to find out exactly where you're leaking.
If it's the top box you'll need the tool for removing the front cover nut. If it's the lower box, you'll need the bearing carrier cover nut tool and pullers for the bearing carrier (this is the one most likely to break) and the shift shaft bushing tool. I believe all the tools are available from iBoats store....

To be honest, I have never even seen one of the old EZ Shift 1C outdrives, they were out before what people now refer to as a "Pre Alpha". The problem is, it's not a one drive which uses the same tools as an Alpha, so I wouldn't bet on them fitting.
Here is a link to the OEM service manual. You can check part numbers between the tools and see if they are the same.
Not sure about gaskets or parts availability either.

Re: 1966 Mercruiser 1-C Sterndrive Reseal

Thanks achris and Don S.
I appreciate your replies.
I realize there are differences in the "1-C" and the "R," "MCM," etc., drives and am aware of the special spanners and sockets required but being a relative neophyte to the Mercruiser world I wonder if this time around it warrants a more experienced mechanic. I have the OEM manuals and pulling the drive is like achris said, short work, but the dismantling of 95 pieces of sterndrive - many of which look very similar is a bit intimidating. Is it something a novice should try with any real hopes of being in the water in a few days? Any idea what a merc shop might charge or how many hours they might bill to reseal, shim and reinstall said drive. Thanks again. This forum is great.
