Good afternoon. This is my first post to this forum. I’m hoping that I can find some guidance on a project that I am very excited about.

Recently, I happened upon a 1966 StarCraft Sunchief 22 foot outboard boat. It has a rating for up to 120 hp. The hull appears to have come out of a time capsule, as its in great shape with no corrosion.

My question is this… I have a pair of Johnson 70 horse two-stroke outboards in excellent condition. Each motor weighs approximately 260 pounds. Do you think that the weight of twin outboards on the back of a boat with a construction such as the sun chief would be stressing the hull?

I’m more concerned about the weight of the twin outboards vs. a single motor of about 115 hp. I am a very moderate user of power. I rarely ever run my motors at full throttle. I’m aware that I’d be overpowering the boat by 20 hp. However, with judicious use, I’m hoping that I would be able to get away with it.

Also, Do you think a single 70hp outboard would plane a boat this size? Would it be grossly underpowered?

Your educated thoughts, experienced Starcraft users???

interesting question, i'm going to follow and see what the scoop is. I think the horse power would not be an issue but the weight across the transom might be?
