1967 20hp johnson

i have a 20 hp 1967 johnson and i need to change the impeller and im new to this.is this something i can do or should i take it to someone else and also could this cause my motor to feel like its slipping at times?any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you jeff

Well, if you have never done it before, and wish to attempt it, get a good manual before starting and read thru it first before you take it apart, to make sure you are comfortable that it is something you think you can handle. It is not terribly difficult, but you have to make sure you do it right, and there are little things, like seating the water line, that have to be done just right for it to work. If you are not comfortable tackling this, by all means take it to a competent shop.<br />And what do you mean by "slipping"?

by slipping i mean it is like being in a staight gear car and riding the clutch it will go but it is hesitant. thanks jeff

Odds are you have a spun prop, causing the "Slipping". Take it to a Prop shop and have it checked out..

The two are separate issues, of course. The water pump impeller pumps water to cool the engine. It has nothing to do with the drive mechanism, so to answer your first question, no the water pump impeller will have nothing to do with this "slipping"
