I just got this motor so I have not had it running at more than high idle. Idles fine but the coil seems to get really hot. Is this a sign that it's going out?

You got the correct, unshortened, original wiring cable from the motor to the ignition switch? Or did you cobble up your own? The red & white striped wire that feeds the coil is a special one-ohm resistance wire. If you use just any old wire, you will cook the coil.

I did cobble my own from the end of the motor plug back. Are any of the other wires special? Can I install a ballast resistor or auto coil w/built in resistor on this? The harness was dry rotted from the plug back and the coil was getting hot before I replaced the wires as well.
