1967 6hp Johnson points question

I have a question on the points setting on this old 67 6hp Johnson. I have researched until I'm almost blind and I'm getting conflicting answers for mysel . When setting the points on this old girl do I align the tab that follows the cam to the key way or do I align it with the word set and if it's the second, where at on the word should it be? Thanks for all the great help here

Best way of course is to set them with flywheel / magplate timing marks and a meter.----Or set them to 0.020" at the widest gap you get.-----Are the coils new ?----These are great running / simple motors.-----Have a bunch now, found another one in a barn this week that I hope to pick up to refurbish later this summer.-----Note---Some will argue on the following info.---The actual gap does not matter as such.--Can be 0.018" or 0.022".-----The exact time that they open does in order to get peak spark.-----Has to do with the magnetic fields.-----It is called a " magneto " after all.

I don't think it says "Set" on your motor. In any case, they are set at their widest opening.​

You are correct F_R. It says top. Not set. Everything on this motor is new and or rebuilt. I took no shortcuts. I picked this up for next to nothing for an old 12 foot aluminum fishing boat someone gave me. The only thing that was retrofitted was the fuel pump. I had a mikuni pump out in the garage and one of the fuel line connections were broke off the original so I made that work. Just doesnt seem to start very easy. Takes quite a few pulls to get her to fire. Once it starts it seems to run pretty good out of a barrel. I havent had a chance to get her out on the water ye .

Without the tool and using a meter, can I roll the engine over until the marks line up and then using a meter, set so they just open at that mark by pulling the flywheel off?

Align the fiber portion of the points with the flywheel key Slot.

Don't make it so complicated. Yes, the timing marks can be used, or better yet, a timing fixture. But it is not a must-do thing. Setting them to 0.020" at their widest opening is plenty good enough. Many thousands of motors running around out there to prove it.

BTW, I used to make the timing fixtures. I would have been glad to sell you one.

Just doesnt seem to start very easy. Takes quite a few pulls to get her to fire. Once it starts it seems to run pretty good out of a barrel.

Make sure it's getting spark on both cylinders; it'll sound okay when it's running on only one. Just pull the plug wire off one at a time while it's running to see if it dies.

Otherwise, make sure the choke is closing all the way, and open the throttle pretty far (the markings on the tiller are usually way off so don't trust the "Start" label). When it's in neutral it should stop you from opening the throttle too far, just open it up to the stop (I'm not 100% sure that model has a neutral throttle stop, so pull the hood off to see it)
