1967 9.5hp johnosn shifter play

Hello all, I have a 1967 9.5hp Johnson, and the shifter seems like it has excessive play, it still shifts in all gears but seems like it should be tighter any ideas? is there a pin that wears out? any help would be great, I have a 67 johnson repair manual but it shows nothing about the shift lever...
