You all might think that this is about the dumbest question that you have ever been asked... but isn't there supposed to be a stream of water coming out of the motor when running? I just got this boat... super cheap and I am finding out why. I think that about everything needs to be fixed if not replaced on the motor. The boat will run good for about 50 ft and then dies. Replaced the spark plugs and fuel line.... little fire.... don't ask.... and seemed to be ok. Engine gets really hot and won't run. Impeller? Ran the boat twice and have never seen any water coming out. Help.... anyone?

Yes, you need a stream of water to come out.
It's what cools the engine. You most likely have a bad Impeller. You probably will need to replace it.
I would also recomend not running your engine until you get that problem fixed. Its very easy to destroy an engine if its not cooled.

Also, you should drain the lower unit and check for water and metal in the oil.

click boating forum at the top of this page, then click engine faq, read awakening a sleeping outboard. you probably need to clean and rebuild the carbs with new kit, impeller, and also read linc and sinc.

Is it pretty difficult to change the impeller? Also, I've noticed in my searching that there are some kits with and without the actual water pump... with major price differences. How do I know if the pump needs to be replaced also? Is it pretty obvious when you tear into it? Thanx for the help. Much appreciated 8)

if you don't know the last time it was done, i'd go with the full kit. it's 40 years old.

The only way to tell which parts you need is the same as a marina either tear it down or throw money at it
