So it is a 67' Evinrude 40hp outboard as stated.. And after sitting 6+ yrs it's running. But while running in a trashcan full of water, I notice the water gets an oily film in top. Once done and drain water, the drain hole just behind the prop oozes brown goo... Is this a faulty seal in the gear box I assume? I checked the gear oil and it is a whiteish/yellow, normal right?

Ah yes, the old oil in the barrel question again. Short answer: Yes it is normal and is not a gearcase leak. However, do change the gear oil and check it after a few runs on the lake.

Ha.. F_R. I knew you'd be the one to answer 😂
I honestly did search, as I did every other question I had. Trust me if I didn't search first their would have been at least 5 other posts of mine that were repeats haha.
There is a question I have, that I didn't search yet but since I have you here..
What oil do you run in the fuel? Something that smokes less than others? Right now I'm using oil from TSC that ibise in my chainsaws..

In 1967 there were 2 types of shift systems offered on the 40hp, the mechanical shift and the electric shift. The electric must use a Type 'C' Oil that is Electric shift compatible . Some Type 'C' oils aren't. OMC changed the name of their Type 'C' to Premium Blend in the the late 70s. The Mechanical shift cases were speced for Type 'C' but could use 75W or 90W gear oil

You asked what oil I use in the fuel. Personally, I use Penzoil 100% Synthetic TC-W3. It does smoke less. However, Penzoil has quit making it. Glad I bought 3 gallons last time. But there are other synthetics on the market.

I like Mystik - they have one with stabilizer already in as well as straight synth.
