1967 johnson 20hp

i have a 1967 johnson 20 hp boat motor. when i get on the throttle it feels to me like the clutch is slipping but im not sure that it has a clutch or not if anyone has any thaughts about this or if you know what else may cause this. i need help with this. thanks jeff jsmzdlt@yahoo.com

Are you sure that it is not cavitation? Like prop slipping in water?

If it's a smooth "slippage" it could be ventilation (prop sucking air from surface) or a spun hub (prop hub no longer firmly attached to prop casting). If it's a violent "kachunk", then it's likely a worn clutch dog. <br /><br />If you can block the prop with a 2x4 and still turn the flywheel over, in gear, then it's a spun hub.<br /><br />- Scott

thank you all. when i rev it up i get no more speed if i just ease on it it will run fine it is just when i rev it up i try to go on is when it feels like its slipping.

Try the board trick that chinewalker suggested. Sounds like a spun hub.<br /><br />OBJim
