1967 johnson 6hp locked up

I have a 1967 johnson that I redid and ran last year. I had it on a stand in the garage over the winter. Finally getting a chance to take it out so I went through the points and general maintenance beforehand but after I put the flywheel back on its locked up. Remove the flywheel and it can be turned again. If I set the flywheel on it and not tighten it, it will turn but if I even snug it well below torque its locked up again. I've had this flywheel off and on several times and I'm at a loss.

You have to move the coils inward.-----They have to be set in the correct position.-----Factory had a special tool for the job.

I've been messing with it all da . Even set the coils in further than they should be. Seems like the flywheel is jamming against the throttle plate somehow. When its tightened down I cant move the throttle either

The ring ( 4 threaded holes ) under the brass ring is installed with flat side UP ??

What kind of puller did you use to remove the flywheel? One that grabs the outside of the flywheel can bend it.

I will have to check the ring under the brass ring. I have never had to use a puller to remove the flywheel. Just remove the nut and wiggle it off. Could that be a problem? Seems like when I just set the flywheel on the shaft and indexed with the key that I can turn the flywheel just slightly before it moves the shaft. That is without the nut tightened

Ok. Checked the ring and it is flat side up, tapered side down. Pulled the plate off and left it off and put flywheel on and everything moves free. I cannot see where anything is hitting or rubbing but when all together and only hand tight on the nut the motor is locked and you cant turn the throttle

You should not be able to wiggle the flywheel off after tightening the nut.------Something is wrong !----Using a factory part # flywheel key ?

I cant give you an honest answer on that. It's the key that has been on the engine since I bought it a few years ago. I dont feel any ridge on either the key way in the flywheel or anything on the shaft or key itself. This thing has kicked my butt all day and I just feel dumb right now

Seeing the flywheel is softer than the shaft and key, does anyone think the flywheel is bad and maybe goes on too far and hits the plate?

Some of these motors are in like new condition.------Others have been touched by club fisted owners.-------Yes somebody could have tightened the nut too much.----I likely have about 10 of those flywheels here and it would be easy to check that theory out !

This motor was far from "like new" condition. I bought a small 12 foot tin v bottom sea king and the motor was included along with a 3hp sea king motor. Neither one of them ran so I did my best to bring the johnson back to life.
I can only speculate that if the flywheel is hitting the timing plate enough to lock it up that the flywheel has to have issues. Do you have a flywheel you'd be willing to sell?

It sounds like the throttle can't move because it's trying to turn the mag plate. Plug wire jammed? Bolt too long jamming underneath? I'd focus more on the mag plate than the flywheel.

Check that you have not put the Mag plate on with the throttle roller jammed under it,I have been known to do that.

Looked again this morning and the throttle plate is on correctly (no screws or anything protruding through the plate)and the roller isnt jammed. Everything is smooth as silk until that flywheel goes on and is torqued and everything is jammed tight. If I even snug the flywheel with a ratchet and socket she is locked up. The only thing I can assume is that the taper part of the flywheel is stretched causing it to seat lower and hit in the groove in the throttle plat . Think that is possible?

Update. I ordered a flywheel and put it on torquing to 40ftlbs. No issues whatsoever so the flywheel must have been spread on the taper allowing it to go down further and contacting the throttle plate. Thanks for the help gentlemen.
