Hello all,

I have Been following this forum for about a year since buying my 1967 Johnson Super Seahorse 33hp from a guy last spring. I have used the FAQ section of this website for all my basic questions and it has helped me a ton.

About August last year my engine started to develop a very hard knock or miss when under acceleration or when running at high speeds. The whole motor kicks about 2" and the boat lunges like you just ran up on a sand bar at high speed. Over the fall it got progressively worse and now does it anytime above idle speed and it does it about once every 10-15 seconds. It is a loud enough knock you can hear it from 300-400 yards away on shore. Any ideas on what this may be and where to begin fixing this?

I also need to replace my throttle and gear cables that run from my steering column back to the motor. Late last fall the gear cable broke at the linkage to the motor and I had to tape it up for one last trip. Any idea where I could find a set of these for a 67'?

Thanks for any help.

You have a shift dog that has failed, and as you discribe the problem, you may have to replace the forward gear also. Any dealer can get you the cables you need.

Thanks RJ. Heading down to my local dealer today to pick up a shift dog and some cables and see if I can get it up and running by next weekend.

Have you taken the gearcase apart yet?

Probably is the dog but could be the cable.
Have you disconnected the shift cable and shifted by hand to see if it works?

Well it was the shift dog. Thanks guys for the input. It had already been flipped around once so I ended up taking it to a local mechanic and had it fixed up by a professional welder.

Boat ran fine and shifted great once I got it back but then I stripped out the lower spark plug hole. Had my mechanic try an put heli-coil in but it wouldn't take. Now I am looking for a used head. Anyone know what years or other horsepower would be compatible for a used head? Not many salvage yards around here at all and would like to know what all will work before I drive 2-3 hours looking for one.

Thanks

Brian
