Hi All,

Intro:
I am new to owning a boat. This is my first boat. I acquired this one from my brother-in-law.

Details:
1967 Johnson 60 hp. 4 cylynder
electronic ingition
model VXL-13A
Serial Number J2746859
90 psi compression

Issue:
99% of the time the engine will sputter and loose power when at WOT or close to it. This only ocurrs when in gear. When it does open up, it hauls butt. However, the next time you open it up it may take a dump on you.

Any useful information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for taking the time to look.

Re: 1967 Johnson WOT issue

Howdy guy and welcome to the forums!

Know any maint history on the engine? Last carb overhaul and such?

First....get an OEM manual. It'll pay for itself in no time with troubleshooting and tips for good engine care.

Check and make sure the fuel tank is venting. If the fuel tank is not venting, you could be losing fuel to the engine.

When running and the engine experiences the said trouble, check the block and make sure it's not over heating. On the otherside, make sure the block is running at a normal temp. You can do this by laying your fingers on the flat areas on top of the block just forward of the heads. At idle, you should be able to lay your fingers there for several seconds before removing them.

Try squeezing the primer bulb. If the engine picks back up, you could have a fuel supply problem or carb problem. Check and replace any fuel lines that are hard.

When the engine does this again...pull the plug wires one at a time and see if it changes the way the engine is running. What you are looking for is the wire that does not cause a change in the engines running. This would mean your losing spark to that cylinder.

I'm sure some of the other guys will be alone to add some more suggestions.

Thanks for the help. The plugs are good, carb has been rebuilt, and the distributor is new with new wires. I will be sure to try your suggestions the next time I get out.

sounds like it may be sucking air, check your fuel lines and connectors as well as the vent like OBJ said
