Hey all,
I noticed when I drug the old girl out that there was gear oil in the lower portion of the drive ( were the exhaust and cooling water exit ).
I searched the forum for such things and found that it could be a couple things... shift shaft, water pump seal, or prop shaft seal.
Now what I did was check my oil levels at the top ... dry, and at the mid point near the water pump vent hole ... dry, and at the bottom and ther ewas not much there.
I have come to the conclusion that the leak must be the prop shaft seal since my oil level had drained to a level below the other possible leaks that I know of ( UNLESS YOU HAVE ANOTHER IDEA ). Now I stoped by a shop today and was told 250 to replace the prop shaft seal, so I want to do it my self. My questions are:
I have a 1967 mercuiser 120 ... what is this refered to? A #1, alpha...?
Does any one know the part number for the spaner I need?
Once I have the spanner what risk do I run having things not come apart clean ( fresh water boat all but about 4-5 times in it's life ) ?
Any part numbers or " when I did it, I found ..." type of advise would be sweat.
Thanks in advance.
