I am new to outboard engine and need help with location of the water pump .I believe it is under the intake hole found on the lower leg . I pulled the two screws holding the cover plate but then I am at what appears to be a dead end. I got it running by reading others postings . This is probably to basic and obvious but I could use some help.

The water pump is in the first bulge above the flat anti-cavitation plate. Remove the lower unit to get to it. You really do need a service manual to learn the basics if you are going to be doing your own work. Some people like to bash it, but the Seloc #1300 manual for sale here at iboats would be an excellent choice for a novice (you).

Thanks I have the stainless water intake plate off . I don't seem to be able to figure out how to get the water pump housing off. I do have a manual for a 1966 but does not give many specifics. Any suggestions, I loosened the linkage at the access port little higher on the opposite side of the leg.
