i live in florida, do i need to have a thermostat in this outboard? thanks

yes, the motor was designed to run at a certain temperature, the thermostat accomplishes that. it can run too cool, causing the motor to foul plugs, it can also allow water to run too fast thru the motor, not taking the heat away, thus the motor runs hot, and you end up with a mass of unusable metal. use a tstat.

Also, if you run your motor in salt water, make sure you run it in fresh water for at least 10 minutes to flush it out. especially if you're going to store it for any period of time. I have seen many motors, where the cooling jackets are completely packed with corrosion, because they weren't flushed properly.:eek:

thanks for the info,the reason i was asking was i was getting some water on a spark plug when i pulled the head i noticed some splits in case around the sleve,so i cleaned it an jb weld it an dont no how well it is going to hold up to the heat,i think water was leaking from head gasket i didnt see nothing wrong with sleeves thanks again gettin ready to go stick some flounder

Heh, the thermostat is the least of your worries. That motor is on it's way to the bone yard, what with the metal separating from the sleeves. Hey, 40 years in Florida water ain't bad!!
