I have an old boat with a 1968 to 1970 OMC 4 cyl motor and OMC outdrive. Tilt mechanism goes down but will not come back up. The motor is good.
How do you raise the OMC outdrive manually.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Welcome to the board...have you tested the motor to see if it gets power when the switch is pressed for it to raise? Could possibly be a bad switch. I'm not the most familiar with it but I think the solenoid could be bad too since it sounds like it's only sending power one way

Look on the port side of drive, you will see three bolts holding the lift gear to the upper box, removing them will let you lift drive by hand.

there will be 2 solinoidsconnected to lift motor try jumping with direct power,if motor works one way iam guessing its switch or solinoid,so jumping should bring it up

Does the motor spin when you flick the switch to raise the drive? Is there a clicking noise? I can think of a couple possibilities:

1. Solenoids are bad - should hear a clicking noise.

2. Battery is weak - again, should hear a clicking noise.

3. Tilt shaft or worm gear is bound up or broken - shouldn't really doing anything in this case.

4. Tilt gear is bound on the quadrant gear - loose bushing on the clutch pack shaft causing the shaft to slop and bind when the drive slams down.

5. Clutch pack housing is too tight causing clutch pack shaft to bind inside the housing - I added an extra gasket to the clutch housing to give the shaft more clearance.

6. Corrosion inside clutch housing causing ring gear, worm gear, clutch pack to bind - open it up and clean everything, etc.

Heh, I didn't even notice that part. Anyhow, you did answer the question he asked, but the rest of us were answering the questions he didn't know he was asking ;)

Oh, and maybe you're better than us? :D
