Okay, on my last fishing trip last year my motor just wouldn't go any faster than an electric motor. I was having an issue shifting betwen neutral and forward before it happened. I got it home and realized that the shift lever had broken. I went to a mechanic and he said you have to pull the power head and replace the whole rod because it's machined with the lever(which I didn't notice at first) He also seemed to think that wouldn't be what was causing the speed issue? Does anyone have any insight as to how in depth this would be to fix myself? I'm pretty sure the lever/rod is the issue but the mech. got me second guessing myself. I'm assuming it just won't fully engage into a gear but I'm open to suggestions. Thanks in advance

you did not tell us much, except the handle is broken. how does the motor run, will is rev up in gear? have you check the lower unit oil, for metal shaving or chunks? did you check the prop drive(shear) pin?

Re: 1968 20 horse Johnson problem

sorry for the vague post. It's been awhile so I can't remember if it revs up in gear all the way or not. I'm thinking that it wouldn't. I haven't checked the oil nor the shear pin. To be honest, I didn't dive real deep into troubleshooting because I thought it was the handle. I ended up finding the exact same motor for $150 so I ran that one.
