I have a 1968 model 35hp Chrysler and I'm having a problem with my starter.
When you turn the key nothing happens. I took a screw driver and crossed it on the stater solenoid and it tries to start. Thought it was the solenoid so I bought a new one and put it on but still the same problem. Can someone help with this problem. Thank you
Larry

If you mean that when you jumped the solenoid the starter turned the engine over, then the problem is either in the ignition switch or more likely the neutral interlock switch.

Look at the shift lever on the starboard side of the engine. It will have a projection that pushes a white button on a brown micro-switch only in neutral. There will be a yellow wire on each side of the switch. One comes from the ignition switch and the other goes to the small positive terminal on the starter solenoid.

The ignition switch sends battery power to the yellow wire in start position and this power goes through the micro switch to energise and close the starter solenoid.

Therefore you need to check the ignition switch, the yellow wires and terminals, and the brown neutral interlock switch.

It was in the Neutral switch, moved it a little and it fired right up! That was so easy I feel real stupid now!!!!!!Thanks for the help.

Next time it happens, move the control handle back and forth once or twice. Because of the design of the control and because of compliance in the cables, frequently on the Chrysler engines, when the control handle is in neutral position, the switch is not. Moving the handle tends to re-center it. If it just keeps happening, try moving the quick-connect on the cable end. It is threaded and therefore adjustable. BUT be certain that when you do adjust, you only use small increments and you keep the shift centered in neutral or else you will lose either forward or reverse gear function.
