I was cruising at about half throttle when my engine appeared to lock up. It stopped
HARD. Got it back up on the trailer and checked a few things out. Engine starts and
idles fine. Took the throttle quadrant apart, started engine - pull on throttle cable
engine revs great. idled down and moved electramatic switch inside quadrant, either
direction results in a slam stop. Reassembled quadrant - with ignition ON and engine
NOT running (plugs out), drive lever engaged in either direction, turning the prop by
hand results in the engine turning FORWARD no matter which direction I turn the prop.
It appears that both forward and reverse drives are being engaged at the same time.
I figured the switch inside the quadrant was shorted out. That checks out OK, but
connecting an ohmmeter across the blue and green wires going to the motor gives
a zero ohm (short circuit) reading. I don't know if that's normal or not. I assume the
opposite ends of both solenoids (or whatever is in there) are grounded so at most I'd
get a reading equal to both coils in series. Which might be close enough to zero to
explain what I'm seeing there. Anyhow, I think I have a short in the wiring harness
somewhere between the dashboard and the drive unit or else I have some kind of
mechanical failure that is causing this. Is there anything inside this drive that could
break and cause this malfunction or is this unavoidably electrical? How difficult is it to
tear into this drive unit and can anyone recommend a shop or repair manual that
covers this motor?

Dave by all means get a manual I have a Seloc
1956 to 1970 1.5 to 40 hp. Try NAPA,the tab at the top of the page,amazon.com,ebay,etc.
Green wire is forward solinoid, blue is reverse solinoid. With B and G wires unhooked at back of motor Check each wire from solinoids to ground should be 4.5
to 6.5 ohms. With B and g wires un hooked at
the back of the motor key on, in forward green from box should be 12v to grnd.in reverse blue from box should be 12v to grnd.In reading manual
it appears both gears could be energized at the same time from a defective switch or something
causing both solenoids to energize at once.It
also appears a mechanical failure could cause the same problem. If youre good mechanically you could probably handle this but it requires special tools and or heat in disassembly.
Get yourself that manual it will make all your repairs easier.
Good luck.

I have a spare electramatic lower unit for a 40 hp johnson. It came from a motor with a seized powerhead, sp I presume that the lower unit was working when the top end packed it in. This motor was taken as a parts engine when I bought another engine. I have no use for this unit. It is a long shaft model, but the extension could be removed for a short leg. Let me know if you need it. I don't need it and it's taking up valuable room in my garage. Toronto Canada

Thanks for the replies. They about tripled my knowledge of this problem. I'll definitely be getting a manual before I take this thing apart. It'll be a few days before I can get back to it, right now I'm in the middle of replacing a cylinder head gasket in the car. I blew that out about 6 hours after the outboard went kaput. Made me wish I hadn't gotten out of bed that morning... If I need that electramatic I'll let you know. Might be a good idea to get it anyway. Sooner or later I'm likely to need it as I plan on keeping this outboard for a while. How much do you figure it's worth? I'm in central Minnesota.

I figure, since you would be buying something sight unseen, and I haven't actually seen this one in operation (I only assume it must be in working order since it appears good, when I drained the oil there was no water in it, and the power head was blown so it was running when the outboard packed it in), how bout $25 plus shipping. I won't charge any handling charge ao packing charge or any of that nonsense, but I might slightly dismantle it to pack it in a smaller box if you're interested. I'll let you know the shipping before hand. Let me know if this sounds fair. I hate to hear of a neat old outboard not being used for want of parts. I would also be interested in a trade for ?? I only sell parts to get me parts that I need, not for actual profit. Horst
