I picked up a '71 Cherokee 16' fiberglass with a '68 40 horse rude and the old guy says he hasn't ran the boat since summer 2006. He told me the points had burn up/melted so he had it fixed but not long after it did the same thing again. It has sat since. I know this is not much information but I'd appreciate all the help I can get. Any ideas?

tilt the motor up, put some mavel mystery oil in the cylinders. let it sit atleast overnite. then lower the motor, and turn flywheel by hand, feeling for any rough spots. it wiil blow the oil out of the plug holes.

now do a compression check. you want near 100 psi, but more important they need to be close together within 10 %. this tells you if you have a viable base to work with.

it is going to need a water pump kit. probably a carb kit, and i would just replace everything under the flywheel. but inspect it first, before ordering.

"Points burned up"?? That just doesn't happen in a OMC Universal Magneto. Unless possibly somebody has incorrectly rewired it so as to apply 12 volts to the magneto. That will also destroy the involved coil. Otherwise, the points may corrode from long storage, or they may get contaminated from grease and oil, or just plain wear out, but not burn up. I suppose you could call excessive pitting and cratering from a bad condenser "burned up" though. Anyhoo, fix it right and it will work for a long time.
