I have 50 hp merc and it has a ID # D479652 is this the serial number or something different ?

Intill 1985 a mercury serial numbers were 7 digits and after that 6 with a letter prefix so that is not a serial or the engine was built after 85.

I have a merc book and it shows it as a serial #
