I've been sitting on this motor for a year and it's time to fix it. I had it looked at and was told that the power pack, rectifier, and starter are bad. Where can I find parts for this year? Am in Panama City, Fl and having trouble locating OMC in my area (afraid I'm new to this what does OMC stand for?).
Shouldn't I be able to rebuild the starter, are the rebuild kits basically the same from year to year just different # of brushes? I really need a cross reference chart for the parts that are on it now. Have looked all over the internet and can't find parts further back than 1971.

Hi Soggy
I don't know where to find parts in your area. OMC stands for Outboard Marine Corp. With this model I strongly sugest that you do your home work before you start spending money. I hate to sit here and spread a cloud of doom, but the majority of these models cost more to repair than they are worth. Most of these units are mechanicly sound. The trouble is the wiring harnesses are shot, Some look brand new until you stick a probe into them, they just turn to dust. This causes the ignition amplifier to blow up. Then there is the issue of the shifting. I am not trashing these motors I own sevral. I repaired one 55hp and have been using it for the last five/six years. I figure I'll have to run it that much longer just to break even on my money. I payed little to nothing for it to start with.

I certainly appreciate your honesty. Would you mind if I picked your brain about a few things to help me get used to this engine? If so I'll fill you in on what my mechanic has said so far. The lower unit is in great condition, the compression is actually perfect. The wiring harness is in good condition but someone tried to rewire it for some reason and he has to put it all back to color coded specs for me. He's looking for the parts around town that I need and I'm trying to help what little I can. I know the most expensive part will be if we need to put a brand new power pack on in (if he can't find a good used one) that will supposedly cost a lot but I can't even find a new one, maybe I'm not lookin in the right places. I want to rebuild the starter if possible but again having a problem finding the kit. He has, same as you, a few of these engines and swears by them. He says I should get about 10 good years out of it. Good thing is that he's one of those rare good ole people you don't much find anymore and he's determined to fix this thing next to nothing, bad part is I'll miss a whole nother summer if I don't get in here and help find the parts that he can't locate locally. I was lucky enough to get boat, motor, and trailer for next to nothing so I don't mind spending a little money on it.
