I have searched and am new to the board and I am having trouble removing the lower end on my Johnson 9.5 hp 1968 outboard motor. It comes down about 3/4 " but the shift linkage seems to be keeping it from releasing the lower unit. I have read of a screw under the carbs but have not found it. The shaft is coming apart because when it is at it's lowest point and I turn the flywheel the prop doesnt move but the more I tug the farther the shifter wants to go up.
Thank for any help given.

Hi
On the side of the exuast leg you should fine a oval shaped cover.
Behind that cover you will find your shift rods they will be connected by a clamp losen the screw on the clamp you shouldn't have to take it all the way out. Then you shoulf be fine. One thing to keep in mind is that some of these will only go one way and some are adjustable to mark your shaft some how.

Good Luck

Once you have the gearcase separated from the midsection enough to insert a screwdriver, reach into the separation and remove the bottom screw from the shift rod connector.

You may need to gently spread the connector a small amount to release the shift rod.
