As some of you know I rebuilt my carbs etc. In the can it runs great up to about 2/3 throttle then then lack of power is displayed. I feel confident my work is good, however I am now curious about the ignition etc part of the comp0nent. Any insight? Thanks Joel

You should not be running it much faster than a high idle in a tank or on muffs. Only go to high RPM when you have it in the lake. You might have an air leak in your gas line somewhere. You have cleaned the carb. but you might have to do it again paying more attention to the high speed orifice. It's located directly behind the bowl drain right in the bottom of the carb. All the junk tends to settle in there. Best of luck. Rick.

I removed the hs jet and cleaned then re assembled. What is the proper fuel mix ratio? I have noticed alot of smoke. It doesn't seem to passing the rubber boot and affecting the carb. I am wonder if my plugs are fouling and that is part of my problem.

50:1 TCW-3 oil. They always look like they are burning rich when in a barrel but out on the lake the breeze takes care of the smoke and they don't appear nearly as bad. If your sure about the carb. being clean then I would re-visit the points. Check to be sure they are perfectly clean and gapped exactly to .020 . I have noticed with mine the point gap and cleanliness is very important. Rick.

Re: 1968 9.5 idles great but...

Rick,
Thank you for the help. I have the OMC Service Manual. Does this put me to removing Flywheel etc? And what are your thoughts on doing the maintenance while I am there? Does a kit exist? Someone told me I could probably get the points at a an Auto parts store? True? Anyway if I get under there I am all about getting as much done that will help the long term end result as possible.
Did I understand you right that you own one as well? What year?

Thanks again,
Joel

Yes I own a 73 Evinrude. Yes you would have to pull the flywheel. Under there are your points, condensers, coils. You should have a look at all. If you have no idea when the points were replaced I would probably just get new ones and do it. Your coils should be replaced if they are cracked but there is a good chance they would have been replaced by now. I would try here at Iboats for your new parts and if they don't have them any BRP marine dealer would have them or get them for you. I have heard many get parts from Napa Auto parts in the US but not here in Canada. Rick.

Oh there are but if you haven't done the "tricks" you risk damaging the crank/flywheel/bearings, best off to get a puller.

And is the puller vintage specific? If so where can I purchase? I saw a strap wrench used in the OMC Service manual. Any help is appreciated.

Once you pull the nut you will see three 1/4 inch taps that you will use to run the bolts in from the puller. Run the main bolt back on a few threads so when the flywheel lets go it doesn't sail across the room. All pullers I'm aware of come with cheap bolts. Discard them and get #8 bolts which are much stronger. Do not despair if it doesn't pop right off. It will come off eventually just keep applying torque to the center screw. To be honest I used to pull them by having a helper hold the weight of the engine by hand under the flywheel and then I would give the crank a hell of a blow with a hammer and punch. It worked every time but now I'm smarter and I tell people to never try it. Rick.

Just a harmonic balancer puller would work, as rick said, grade 8 bolts too.

They always seems to smoke after idling, even on the lake they will blow blue smoke when you give it the gun after a period of trolling or low speed. If the low speed mixture is a tad rich, it makes the smoking a bit worse. Some people who only troll have reported using a leaner oil to gas mix(Leroy) but plugs, and de-carb sauce is cheap, so I would not risk doing that, besides, what would you do if you want to go faster than trolling?

Acetone will clean new plugs that are just oily, or just replace them if suspect.
