1968 Chrysler 9.9 cooling question

After reading up on a lot of forum here, I finally decided to become a member. I am not new to boats or outboards but I've never owned one quite like this. The model# is 901. From what I've read, it's kind of a rare motor (or I can't find much about them). That being said, I bought the motor from an older gentleman who didn't use it for 2 years. I've put it in a barrel to see how it runs and it runs like a champ. I didn't notice a pee stream only to find out these older motors don't pee. I changed the impeller, thankfully because it was worn, but I'm still worried it's not getting water flow. I've heard it comes through the exhaust in the foot. How do I check this? I bought rectangular muffs but they don't quite seem to fit. Maybe I'm missing the water intake? Just kind of nervous about it.
Thank you for accepting me into the forum. I'm excited to be here. Feedback is much appreciated.

No Title

At the link below I can see cooling water coming out in the exhaust. This is how cooling water exits from my 1970 35 HP Chrysler. To see solid water (pee) vs mixed in the exhaust, I added a Tell Tale. You would need to ask one of the Pros here if there is a port as on my 35 hp a Tell Tale can be added to show solid pee off to the side for easy viewing. Otherwise a mirror might allow you to see the water in the exhaust from your position w/o too much wind resistance.

Post a Pic of your motor running deep (as in the lake) in a barrel to show water in the exhaust. If the motor is not deep as in a lake, it possibly will not exhaust cooling water.

Nordin has a wide range of Chrysler motors and possibly can address the issue if you can add a tell tale to see solid pee.

There is no good spot to add a tell tale at the 9,9 Hp.
If you use the engine with the tiller you not need a tell tale. You will easy see it just looking back at the engine.
Back at the leg the engine has two holes. Part ofthe cooling water and exhaust will exit there.

Best way to check the cooling is to run the engine in a barrel, using muffs is not so good at smaller engines because the intake at the LU is not large enough to fit the muffs.
When runnig in a barrel you must have the waterlevel about 2 in higher then the splitting of the LU to the midleg.
The waterimpeller is mounted there and it need to have the level above the impellerhousing because the impeller is not selfsucking.

I would do Nordins plan just looking back at the motor for water.
If you put the impeller in right your fine. If this is your first impeller, You-tube explains it perfectly.
The bottom line, you can still burn up a motor in 20-30 seconds if the stat is stuck shut, and water is coming out the indicator hole.
It's best to put the stat in warming water ,what temp does it open?.

I haven't yet used the muffs because I wasn't confident in the seal. Glad I didn't. Seeing as though I'm at work for the next couple of days, the video will have to wait but I'll make sure to post one the second I get a chance to. As far as the three exhaust holes at the top of the leg--I read that those were overflow and the water exited from the foot exhaust. I suppose I read incorrectly. I don't have that spray coming from those 3 top exhaust holes. I also have no idea how hot the stats open (or how to even get to them for that matter). Thank you all for the promt and useful responses.

Probably no thermo in that small motor.
Being as it's a 68 there probably won't be much written about this oldster.

There are a couple of sites that specialize in older motors. Google.

Mastertechmarine does older motors.

If you have the slits on the side of the case for water pickup?? you need a special muff.

Since I loaded windows 10 I can't access my pics or I'd post a pic of the right muffs.
Send me a PM with your e-mail and I'll send it to you.

10-4 figuring out how to use pm right now (new here). And I've done loads of google searches on this motor, model number an all and haven't found much of anything.
If by "slits" you mean the gill looking holes behind the prop, yes sir it has those. That's where I was 80% confident the intake was but couldn't get a good seal. There goes $15 lol.
I kinda figured there wasn't a stat because I didn't see any housing for it. Like I said before, the second I get home from work tomorrow and get a chance, I'll take pictures.
Thanks
