Ok, here is my story for the Mem. weekend.

1). Get boat in water. Will not start. Remove kill switch, starts fine.
2). Shifter is stuck in forward gear, regardless of shifter position. Fun Factor(FF) = 6, but hey, I can still go forward right.
3). Slow to take off, like it's pulling 5 tubers and 2 skiers. FF = 3
4). Give it a little more gas, say 1/2 throttle, starts moving nicely. FF = 7
5). Floor it, boat launches and runs like a raped ape for 30 seconds(no offense to apes). FF = 10
6). Let off throttle back to idle because my a**hole is shrinking from the speed(only a 13'10" boat) and it starts the hard, sluggish pull again. FF = 3
7). Try and accelerate 3 more times. No accel., but it felt as if it wanted to, like if I could just find the exact right throttle position it would go. FF = 1.
8). Had to idle the 1/4 mile back to shore.

Now oh wise master boaters, what just happened to my engine. Hard acceleration, lagging, and the shifter stuck in forward? The shifter wires are correctly assembled (I am a MI state/ASE certified automotive Elec.). My guess, timing or plugs.

check your spark if the cd amplifier is not giving full spark it will cause it to act as if it is not getting the gas. I have a 69 55hp and thats what was the matter with mine doing about the same as yours. My spark was not an 1/8 inch long and sometimes it would go like crazy and others not go at all. I replaced the cd amplifier with a car coil and condenser and now it rums fine. Could be plugs but not likely timing unless you sheared flywheel keyway. If you have a good spark try spraying a little premix into carbs when it is stalling and pumping bulb it could be carbs need rebuilding or a air leak or obstruction in fuel lines or busted diaphram in fuel pump or fuel pump screen stopped up. I know I have told you a lot of things to check but if your points are good and set correctly at .010 and you have a good spark at least 7/16 inch with good plugs then it must be in the fuel system. As far as being stuck in foward that is the default on this motor until it cranks after it cranks you should be able to go to neutral or reverse if you cant reverse the wires going down to the lower unit if they are wrong that will cause it to stay in foward. good luck

REELSPORT,
I had checked hte F-N-R switch prior to installing it. Recieved what I thought was the correct readings. But green to green, blue to blue, etc. It would not shift out of forward regardless of shifter position.

Perhaps a stupid comment, but have you checked the oil level in lower end. As these are hydraulic shift one needs oil. My son has one of these & called me last weekend with the stuck in forward problem. His lower end is leaking & to much water / oil mix for it to shift. Drained refilled with type C & worked fine. Obviously we need to re-seal lower end.
