1968 Evindrude 18 Fastwin Shift Handle

Hello. The shifting rod on the motor is sheared off right at the power head. It currently is tapped so a screw can be used to shift gears. So, how hard and what do I need to do to replace the rod that comes out and connects to a gear shift handle? Is there anything I can do to make shifting easier in the meantime?

If it were me, I'd call up the guys at laingsoutboards.com and get them to send you the correct used parts that you need. It shouldn't be all that expensive.
This way it'd be fixed right. I was thinking that there was a linkage under the powerhead for the shift shaft. Did the threads just break off?
