I have been tinkering with a 1968 evinrude 18 h.p. that has been sitting for 5 years due to a bad foot.I have replaced the foot with a used one and cleaned the carb, points and so on.The engine runs very good in a barrel but I can see NO signs of the water pump working. The exhaust exits under water around the prop area and I find a hole on the rear of the motor about half way down about the size of a dime.I assume that this is where the water should exit but nothen happening there at all.Anyone got any ideas for me?? Thanks fellows for the help. P.S. the engine seemed to be very warm after a minuate run in the barrel.

It's been a while and I don't rember if that motor has a tell tale.. But there should be some water comming out of the exhaust port... Have you serviced the water pump? If it has been sitting for five years the impeller is probably long gone...

I will second snapperbait. All my early model Johnson/Evinrude ('74 and prior) have a dime size exhaust outlet midway down the exhaust housing, and a solid spray of water comes out of there when the water pump is working. If the pump is failing, then water mixed with steam will come from there, but no water or steam means no pumping. On my '74 Johnson 15 hp, I didn't pay enough attention to the water pump and, after the engine siezed due to overheating, I ended up with an $800 bill to rebuild the power head, including replacing the two ruined pistions. Water pumps are a lot cheaper and easy to replace.
