hey everyone. this is my first time post, and first boat, so bear with me.

I recieved a 14ft alumacraft, with a bunch of extra goodies (seats, oars, depth finder, trolling motor etc) but the motor I got with it is in need of a bunch of TLC. so far I have rebuilt the carb to help the idle issue, and cleaned everything up. yesterday I went to change the oil and opened the plug, nothing but water came out (bad sign right?) so I went to drop the lower unit and check the seals, there was not a seal between the part that comes off, and the upper unit, is that correct? I also am having issues re-connecting the shifting linkage at the bottom, I connect it, and tighten the screw, but when I reassemble everything, the shift points are off (it seems like it was connected in the wrong position), and if i shift too hard it disconnects, any advice there?

I am sure you will be hearing from me a lot. thanks in advance!

cheers.

First, Ian, you need an OEM Service Manual. Working on any outboard without one is a really bad idea. That is exactly why you are in trouble with the shift linkage.

When the gearcase is full of water the first suspect is the gaskets under the vent and drain plugs. They are use-once, crushable gaskets. If re-used they are certain to allow water intrusion.

That is a really great little engine, but she requires correct care and maintenance. Get the Manual.

Good luck, Ian, and welcome to iboats. :)

There is no seal between the lower unit and the exhaust housing to which it bolts up to. None is needed there.

Hopefully you did not remove the philips screw that is located in the skeg of the lower unit. That is a long shoulder pin type bolt which is actually a pivot pin for the internal shift linkage.

Water in the lower unit can be a result of a bad seal under the water pump area, a bad seal in back of the propeller, a faulty shift rod O Ring...... as JB states above, a service manual will help you avoid expensive mistakes.

The shift rods (upper and lower) have grooves which must be aligned with the bolt holes in the brass shift connector. My guess is that you overlooked that item. Let us know how you make out.
