I made a post in another thread and it was recommended I start my own thread. I was able to successfully get my kill switch installed in my 68 6 hp motor last night. Relatively simple job. I hadn’t thought to drill through the magneto, and it made for a very simple solution. Works perfectly.

New plugs, new fuel pump, new fuel lines, new water pump, new gear lube, set the points and this thing is running well! It’s actually running to well I might try to sell her. A 9.9 or 15 would be better for my needs now that I’m learning more about outboards and hp.

Will post pictures!

great news .. that little fisherman 6hp is a great engine..now that you have the oldies bug why not just keep it ...you never know.

Depending on you market you may or may not... get much for it because folks are getting less inclined to buy oldies . I have picked one up for 60$ cdn

Although simple technology, lot of shop won't touch anything more that 10 years old because they don't know better :) and make more $$$ on expensive parts. Their hourly rate will exceed the motor value !!

Agreed , shop labor is the roadblock with these simple motors.-------New products are engineered for quick assembly in the factory.-----No adjustments and not fixable.-----Just wait till folks realize that the big $$$ EV they bought to save money ends up to be a financial disaster.

These are wonderfully simple , well engineered motors.----They run like Swiss watch if in good condition.----People who know about these motors have a few of them.----Others do not want them because the shop around the corner refuses to work on it.

I’ve pretty much finished this one up. Found a nice (in pictures) 1955 5.5 for $100 no clue on if it would run. I might go get. I’m ready for my next project. That said I’d get more use from 15 hp

1955 uses 2 line fuel tank good tanks are sometimes more $$$ than a motor !!

2 hose tanks ... maybe a bit more complicated but they can be modiifed to use a fuel pump... great projects !! purist prefer 2 hose tanks :)

btw to change impeller is a bit tricky... must remove the power head (7 bolts and hose etc... then disconnect the shift linkage bolts to drop the gc. not a big deal realy

you should vist AOMCI org. ASK A MEMBER forum site where oldies is the " raison d'être"

Some scoff at the idea of having to lift the powerhead off.----Fact is , the motor is 65 years old and likely the original gears and clutch dog.----Simply because shift adjustment is factory set and a novice can not mess it up I think.----When powerhead is off there is the opportunity to service that durable seal mechanism at the top of the driveshaft.

and.... you get a chance to really clean up the exhaust lower portion... carbon accumulates big time. the base gasket is year dependent so choose the proper one if you replace it see#303467

be careful not to drop the fat round CARBON seal....very delicate !!

Sweet! I messaged the guy he said he might have sold it. He has a bunch of older outboards, but I’m waiting to hear back

A good deal.-----Do a complete evaluation before trying to start it.
Began that tonight, decent compression 90/80, I can’t seem to find my spark checker, it’s missing the recoil, but that’s the only part I can find missing. Not locked up, but it hasn’t been ran in a long time. I think she’ll be a runner yet. And if not I’ve got a great parts motor.

Since the 1955 fell through I found a 1956 15 hp to pick up. He said the glass bowl is broke. I know nothing about it. Be fun to learn on

Evinrude will start for a new seconds and die. Sort of a pain to start without the pull rope assembly.
