The water that pumps through the motor gets too hot to touch. I recently tore down the water pump and the impellar was okay. Intact, but the blades were a little curled in so I ordered a new one. As I wait for it in the mail does this amount of frothy oil tell of more issues? Or simply just water mixing with unburnt fuel from the exhaust? The gear oil is still blue so it's not coming from there. Just curious if any one has seen this before.

Thanks in advance for those that have suggestions.

In preparation of putting the water pump back together does the gasket (part# 303339) that sits between the bottom of the water pump housing and top of the the lower unit use Johnson Gasket Sealer (can with the brush top lid) or 3M 847? Does any sealer go on the impeller housing plate (part# 305303)? I am guessing it would be 3m 847 since its metal to metal.

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply Crosbyman. I don't think it is the thermostat. It is two years old and seems to function fine. I will check it if the impeller doesn't solve the issue.

Be certain your intake, hole ,screen is clear. I had the same issue, changed the impeller and it would slowly over heat. I was ready to pull the head to see what was going on and realized the intake screen was clogged. You can hook a drill to your driveshaft after installing your new impeller ,submerge your lower unit so that the water pump is under water, turn it on in forward to see that u r pumping water. Start there. As Crosbyman says check your thermostat. While doing so you can backflush through the thermostat hole if needed. Lastly run a garden hose with your own invention adapter up the water tube to check for flow through the power head. Good luck.

Update! Problem solved. I had the water intake screen on the port side of the lower unit on backwards....So it would pump water fine in neutral and reverse but in forward gear it wasn't able to suck enough water in because the holes in the screen were facing the wrong way. DOH!

Thanks for the help! Running like a champ now.

The main water intake is behind the propeller / on exhaust outlet.----Screen there is easy to clean / replace.
