Here is a link to the other post: https://forums.iboats.com/forum/eng...0881306-1968-johnson-9-5hp-acceleration-issue
  • Put new spark plugs in
  • Compression at 60psi on both cylinders
  • Changed Lower unit oil today which looked gross. Pic attached.
  • Got it on the water today see if Maybe it would accelerate no problem and there is still the issue where it will not accelerate. I turn the throttle to fast and it wont. It feels like it wants to go but will not. Started in two pulls as well which was surprising
Like I was suggested on the other post I will clean the carb hopefully tomorrow and same with the impeller. Will these fix the issue or am I going to be in the same spot? Also as I was on the boat is it possible that the shaft can bee too much in the water due to me sitting there steering? would this cause part of the problem?

Sorry for the lengthy post. Any input is greatly appreciated thank you. Couple other pic attached as well. And to note this is the first time Someone is looking at this motor after years in the shed. Was my grandpas.

Tried uploading a pic of the motor with the cap off but file size too big.

Hesitation immediately makes me think of fuel. Is it a hesistation?. I would start by cleaning the carbs and replacing fuel hoses if they look worn on the inside.

I will look at the fuel lines.

The best way to describe it is that I turn the throttle towards fast and it feels like it should pick up speed but stays at that pace where it wants to go.

I try and turn the throttle slow towards fast sometimes hoping it feel catch something and go full speed. Not sure if that's hesitation in the outboard world.

Does spark jump a gap of 1/4" or more , yes or no.-----These motors are famous for cracked / bad ignition coils.----You should pull the flywheel off.----You will find it needs 2 new coils or a new set has been installed already.----Only way to find out is by testing and inspecting !

Thank you Racerone. I will pull the flywheel off today. This is a total beginner question. But what problem does it determine if the spark plugs dont jump that gap?

I appreciate it👍

You do not use the sparkplugs for this gap test !!!-----The ignition system was engineered / built to be able to put out 28,000 volts if in good / new condition -.----A sparkplug laying on the block does not need 28,000 volts to show a spark.-----So basically you need to / want to determine how good your system is !!!

Miss typed spark plugs. Meant "Spark test" and what that determines.

But That makes sense for sure. Thank you.
