1968 Kiekhaefer Mercury 1250ss 6 cyl

some background:
I got the boat from a relative and it was sittin for 2 yrs.
I was having trouble with reverse, the water pump was just replaced before it sat, so we (me and a buddy) checked the upper shift shaft and found that the lower part of it to be very much stripped out from rusting..so i replaced that....now i dont have any gears ..no forward no reverse..ive tried many positions and nothing is workin for me...

#1) How do i find the correct position of the lower shift shaft to reinstall the lower unit?

#2)Do i need to put oil in the lower unit for the gears to work? Just to try the position.(like an automatic transmission works)

#3) What year lower units are compatible with my engine?...so i may change in case of a problem.

The motor itself runs great.. no problems at all.

Thank you for any assistance.

Gary sounds like you are going to be working a lot on your motor. You should work from a ser. manual. You can get reprint owners and ser. manuals from Grubbs Marine at:www.oldmercs.com
You may be able to do some research at the library as well. I dont know adj. procedure for your motor but Im sure the manual will clear it up.If the motor has sat alot I would check the
fuel system.Lots of times an old motor will start and run well and gradually get worse and worse
from weak parts and junk in the system.

You dont need oil in the lower unit if you are sure there is enough lube for the parts to slide correctly. You may need to crank the motor slightly for the dogs to engage correctly.Just a jog is enough.
