I have a 1968 5hp long shaft Johnson which I would like to convert to short shaft. I have a parts book which shows the long shaft as having a 5inch extension kit assembly. Is conversion to short shaft just a matter of removing this section or is it more involved and requiring extra parts? I do not want to attempt this conversion unless I can get it all back together again into working order.

in addition to removing the extension you will have to shorten the water-tube by 5" and replace the vertical drive shaft with a standard length one. It looks as though the latter will cost you $80.

Not sure if the water tube can be shortened by that amount in situ or whether it will have to be removed, or at least lifted out with the powerhead

why not just keep it like it is and install a transom elevator.

Transom elevator
you can either do a transom elevator or a jack plate. we are talking about a 10 hp, so a transom elevator is the right solution. it is taking 4 pieces of 1 1/4 inch aluminum angle, sold at home depot near the screws and nails. you put a 2x6 on top of your transom thru bolt it with 4 bolts, then thru bolt thru the transom. i would use 18 inch pieces of aluminum angle. so you need 4 pieces of angle and 10 3/8 bolts& nuts, 20 washers 10 lock washers. get it mounted set the motor and go boating, safely.

Thanks for the info. I am not very confident with having to add to or change the drive shaft but a transom elevator sounds an ideal solution for my little boat. I shall make one up in the week and, hopefully test it out in a couple of weeks time, weather permitting here in the UK!
