New to boating and iboats! Just picked up this 1968 merc 60, and got it running pretty good with the help of this site! But I do not see any water coming out anywhere! I was wondering if anyone has this motor and could tell me. Or if someone would happen to know where the tell tale is on this particular motor! Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Been a long time. Guessing you have the original design 6 cylinder "tower of power" or the 4 cylinder little brother in 60 hp.

Until Merc redesigned it's engines it had no thermostat and no tell tale. In the redesigned engines, your 60 would have 3 cylinders. Water comes out the exhaust relief holes in the mid section rear sometimes and if you have thru prop exhaust, from the end of the prop hub. If no thru hub and the exhaust is at the rear and under the anti vent plate, from there.

Unless you have the year wrong there would not have been a 60hp in 1968. Do you have the engine s/n?

Presumably you are talking about a Merc model 60, which is a model number 1060108.

Parts List:

MERC 60 - Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. Parts Lookup

See item 6, brass plug, under CYLINDER BLOCK AND CRANKCASE ASSEMBLY. If it had a telltale hooked up, it should be there.

Quote from Carholme (Presumably you are talking about a Merc model 60, which is a model number 1060108.)
yes I'm sorry i should have stated that it is a 6 hp model 1060108.

Carholme- the brass plug you pointed out in your reply, I backed it out a little and water started to seep out! Can a tell tale be added by removing that plug? Is there a kit avilable?

Thanks for any help

I haven't been able to locate a kit, however you should be able to do your own. The plug you are removing will have 1/8 - 27 NPT thread size and you should have no problem finding a 90 degree brass fitting with the same thread size and the necessary tubing. If you are unsure about it, your local dealer should have the parts,

Then drill an appropriately sized hole in the lower rear cowling (the cowl that is still on the engine when you pop the cover) such that you can see the stream from your driving position...usually toward the rear on the starboard (curb, right) side. Slightly too small would be best as it will hold the hose in place. Cut it off quarter to half inch beyond the cowl. I installed one on a '75 70 omc, drilling and tapping the hole too as there wasn't one and it worked fine.

Just wanted to thank both of you for all your help I did see a pic another thread of a brass elbow and water line! I'm sure I can rig something together! I just wanted to make sure that plug was the correct spot.

Thanks to Carholme and Texasmark, these two guys were fast in replying to the thread and stuck through to make sure they answered and handled the problem!

There is usually only one brass plug and it is either for that or for some engines that already have one, and an over temp switch installed, it's for a thermometer installation that sends a temp signal to a dash gauge so that you can read engine temp while underway. Let us know how it works out for you.
